Campus Confession III

Image
The clip below genuinely speak of how life was like in campus.  It speaks volumes, but it was part of life.

Joining the Dots

Image
Photo Credit:Pinterest Steph alighted from a Matatu in Nairobi at OTC bus station. He had travelled for one and half hours from his home County. The thoughts of the warm welcome by his parents and the delicious 'aromatic' food are still fresh in his mind.He had first to reset his mind and body into aggression mode and ready to hit shoulders,as well as apologize to several whom he will have stepped on their toes. Before making a step  further he watched the hustle and bustle of Nairobians he chuckled and wondered,'Why are this people running up and down, can't they be relaxed?,Why can't they shop online? At this point he tapped his red bag pack which had his Laptop,a few clothes and 10 chapati's. He had to tightly adjust the shoulder straps and waist harnesser...otherwise he might realize why not everyone has a laptop. He started maneuvering his way through,..then a thought hits after seeing how everyone just minds their own business, 'What is my ...

Campus Confession II

Image
I love change,as a result I was eager to know what there is after campus, though it came with mixed reaction of happiness(no more books) and uncertainty(what next). There were so many unanswered questions(not yet fully answered even as I write this). All the same I had to face it.I told God to reveal to me directly(Plan A) what he wants me to do otherwise I will apply to 100 companies for job in Logistics and Supply Chain,Marketing & Graduate Management Trainee(Plan B).If a job comes,I will conclude it's God will, if it doesn't He wants me to go ahead with plan C which I love more than B. My plan C is being in business.Unfortunately when business is mentioned there are some people who start seeing me busy selling unga, salt, sugar,or something of the sort.A kiosk or even better a tuckshop. Nooo,a business is a system that makes you money even when you are absent for an year because it has structures. Most of what we call business is self-employment because they die when ...

Why I joined O.D.M Camp

Image
When  O.D.M is mentioned most of us perceive this are political news but nope!. Politics is another days' article...In  this context it means One Disappointed Man...and that person is me.Yesterday was a day of it's kind,I was having a C.A.T in one of the units I'm taking in my Undergraduate studies referred to as Accounting For Equities. When it comes to studies there is no time that one will fully say that She/He is ready to tackle that exam, there is still some doubt as to whether you've fully covered what is expected of you. I convinced myself that I'm Ok and walked towards the exam station, from the hostel I was sharing with a friend how campus life is different from what everyone thinks when joining...like there is no working hard to pass,Every one is evil in campus...but on the contrary Campus can frustrate you if you lazy around, n this is a place where we have extremely good people but also extremely bad...lukewarmness ain't the language, you've to c...

Life,Just Started

Image
I asked my parents how my life was when I was a toddler, the response: fun -oriented,inquisitive,vulnerable to diseases( Had even been admitted to a  hospital for Pneumonia) & wanted to be in the company of my Dad. I recall my first day in Pre-Primary school,it was war,I didn't want to be separated  from the warmth of my parents. With time I got used, but I can't forget several incidences: One is the porridge we used to take(hated it,but you had to take under supervision). Second, the final exam used to be oral where you had to identify colour and alphabets.(Failed to talk, therefore it was decided I can't proceed, but my Dad insisted I had to re-take it in the presence of the head teacher and him too,it's then that I gathered courage and was allowed to proceed primary). Third, the do's and don'ts and the final prayer of the day that used to go:"Thank you Lord for your care from morning till now Amen"And chuup! run out of class like we were f...

'Discambuate' This Man if You Meet.

Image
Life is a journey. It takes bold steps to move from one point to the other. A lot happen to our lives we may be tempted to almost give up. In the blink of an eye someone just appears from nowhere makes two or three statements in a jovial mood and all over sudden the room is filled with laughter and smiles. There are people who create memories and help even to keep them alive. Took us the most memorable photos, made the most comical statements, shared with us their mind for reference in case of trouble. Talk of creativity and all-roundness, these are the people who will give an approach to something and you'll be left,'ahaa, classic thought'. You  sit with them in a brainstorming session and let your thoughts flow, come up with an idea and they add a tonnes of weight ot it .It becomes concrete. These are the kind of people you wish you met earlier in life. Things would never have been the same  again. But appreciate them since they came when they were needed mos...

First Day in Campus

When I was admitted and oriented to Lower Kabete I thought this was my life time chance to turn around things.I was optimistic that my course mate&lecturers would leverage my mind into realizing my long-lived dream of getting business ideas and exploiting opportunities. But I was amazed and amused to get into my 'Quantitative methods of Business' class to start another impractical journey into realizing my goal... In short buddies do you recall the Micro-economics question on Consumption,Income&sleep OK tell where in real world will you apply such stuff. After conversing with fellow comrades they told me you have to struggle with this 'things' so as to pass get a nice grade and a well paying job...it sounds good en he!Here is the trap very few will tell you how you can use your entrepreneurial skills to apply what you are studying, some students argue that they don't have the money to venture into business but the reality is they don't have viable busin...

GMO Kids

Image
Being through with exams is the best experience as student,I went basked in the field....I laughed when I remembered the awesome moments in my childhood days. Class Two: We were learning a singing memory game going like this,"head, shoulder, knees and toes..."unfortunately I had forgotten where the knees were!,I touched the head, shoulders,(skipped the knees) and touched the toes twice,wa,this was the first time I was caned on my butts(I added weight due to swelling, the teacher didn't have mercy) Class Three: I used to perform well but there was competition from friends especially one Tony,Alice,Stane...but an incident I will never forget is when I was told to go and buy a queen cake,oh my what's this!,I just went and asked for a cake and I was given mandazi-like cakes,I forgot the word 'queen'!,took it to the teacher but said no ,'I want a queen cake",but because I was jumpy and hitting the ball...again I forgot,'queen' I bought some ...

Goodbye Campus

Image
Aroma Springs at Ngong' Hills I woke up earlier today.2hrs prior to my normal waking time,I mean at 6am(very early in deed, hee, small head).I'm catching up with my short notes, mwakenya,of my last paper in campus,Project Management(DOM 402).'Yauauauaaaaaa,wuuui',this are yawning screams of Simon ,'Hungu/Hawks' as we usually refer to him who stays directly down my room in first floor of Meru hostel,I have been staying in Meru 36.Another comical guy who uses English like Babu Owino having been my room mate in 2nd yr,Kape 55 (This reminds me of the other rooms I stayed at;Kape 43 with Nderitu and New York  G03 with Muragz). ...At 9am,I'm seated at Biashara hall,Onserio Nyamwange is the one administering the exam.Well, the paper is fair but one had to think since it was mostly application.I like it since cramming has never been my thing.I was lucky to have chosen a specialization from Department of Management Science, they've really taught me to think non...

Day One 'Out Here'

Image
Photocredit:Pinterest I’m leaning on the grill from the fifth floor of the current place of residence, listening to hymn instrumentals. It’s 6pm.I’m enjoying one of the most beautiful scenery of nature; magnificent, dimly red-orange beautiful rays of the sun going down. I like it. It helps me get critical and deep about life as well as acting as a relaxer. Last night I didn’t have a chance to sleep having gone to a sleep over organized by Rays of Hope. On arrival at the venue I’m thrilled by the creativity and entrepreneurial nature of the owner who has built a conference facility at his place of residence for hire. It’s in a low density estate gated community. As introductions continue it really hits me hard and emotional to remember what had happened during the day. Parting ways with some of the most brilliant people I’ve spent my time with for the last four years. I remembered the laughter we’ve ever had, the team building activities, the challenge they gave me, the s...

Irreversible Mistake

Image
Early this week I wrote an article begging for a  2nd chance  but it is eminent that some blunders are costly and are meant for us to learn while the affected individual or entity languishes. I still appreciate that we’re prone to make mistakes, to err they say is human but there are times that is just a mere consolation bearing in mind that there are irreversible mistakes.  The Japanese, ’Just in Time’ philosophy is one of its kind that almost condemns errors & waste. Computers have revolutionalised the way things are done by enhancing precision and accuracy.  The phrase, ’Quality, quality, quality!’ is not new in modern times all this is attainable via ensuring there is no mistake in their processes. Think of the bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Kodak’s failure to revamp its digital camera, Nokia’s slow uptake to adapt to touch screen technology made its image tarnished and be overtaken by other mobile phone manufacturers, Think of our educati...

Risky?

Image
Whenever the word risk is mentioned most people tremble. They think that the outcome of a risky undertaking is always negative. It's justifiable because from definitions such words as probability/threat/likelihood/possibility are used but none gives certainty that it must happen. So,does this mean that if a situation is risky they should be avoided? Let's look at a 'risky' scenarios here: -Not following what everyone else thinks is right. The story of successful school drop out can be an example or those who due to circumstances, didn't get a chance to further their studies and they still turn out to be victorious. Also the fact there are people who have taken the path less taken and turned out to be heroes tells us a lot. The best way I've found to analyze risk is looking at the worst case scenario of an undertaking. An example would be between channeling our energy into getting employment and trying out business which is riskier? Employment: ^What it ta...

It's Like a Soccer Match

Image
I'm an avid soccer fan. I play and watch the game of any team with no loyalty or psycho-fancy to any club, only my national team. Nonetheless,I'm inclined to love teams which play  tiki taka  soccer and so your guess is as well as mine. I'd first wish to console the fans of club that lost over the weekend.I'm still wondering what's happening to the 'big' clubs, they're thoroughly being punished by 'small' teams. Business,Life and Soccer are synonymous: Not that we are weak in any way. Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal (EPL,28-08-11) At times life can heftily punish us,not because we are in anyway weak but it just happens.Even after the defeat the esteem should always be high, knowing that it's not the end there is still another chance to try being the best.   Let the mighty have their way. Germany 8-0 Saudi Arabia (World Cup  2002 ,June 1) At times we have to let the mighty have their way. There is little we can do;they have the authorit...

Why?

Image
A young girl wasn't eating the head and tail of fish. She was very disgusted when she saw others eat them. But, one day she decided to re-look into why she wasn't eating them. She noted that her mother had not been cooking the same too. On inquiring her mother responded that her mother, now the granny to the girl, was not cooking them too. The girl got shocked. She thought now is the perfect chance to know why the granny wasn't cooking the head and the tail of fish who in turn responded that her mother, great grandma to the girl, wasn't cooking them too! This made the girl furious and amused at the same time, luckily the great grandma was alive. The grandma started by giving history on different issues and finally responded to that,'..my pan was too small to accommodate an entire fish so I chopped the tail and the head!' Have you ever sat down and asked yourself why this or that. Many are the times when we join the boats of others without asking deep que...

Passive Income I {Royalties}

Image
Passive income is my all time favorite source of money.I invest my resources in my quest to enter this bracket. If you are a believer that you don't have to work your entire life time for money, that you can let money work for you while you do what you love most, then this is yours. It is an income received on regular basis with little effort required to maintain. One invests one off energy and the rest is simply maintenance. My business mentor earns from this bracket.I asked him what he does with his time since at the end of the day money will still enter his account,'I utilize my time thinking hard on how someone will labor hard for me'. He responded,'You know people are all over looking for jobs to do, not entities to start,it's their choice, who am I not to offer them that'. If someone pays you 50k,how much do you think he is making  through you...',he continues.I chuckle but feel bitter.'Sam,think!',he pauses.I'll look foolish as long as I c...

A Lunch With A Millionaire

Image
I've had the privilege like most of us have had,of talking with millionaires. But there is a  'unique' category of people. When they get a chance they start asking questions like,'How to make a good CV','What are some of the questions asked during interviews','Can you get me a job or a connection of a job'...I must confess I find this ridiculous. What business does a millionaire have to do with the gimmicks that happen during interviews or to get jobs instead of making another million? I think it's only that they shy away from calling us stupid. It's like going to a spiritual leader to inquire about a medical condition or mortgage, they will only pray  and 'libainasaikayokutaichi' for us,but that's faith without action which is dead. We throw parties to friends spend a few thousands for this, but has it ever crossed my mind to invite for lunch one of the many millionaires we have in town? Not that I will be trying to impress(any way ...

Campus Confession I

Image
Photo credit:Pinterest 'Aaagh,Alarm again at 5 am,God will understand, why can't I just say my prayers from here',that's my cold inner voice fearing to go for morning devotion.'But,wait, what and where are those 'funny' voices coming from'.I raise my head from bed in curiosity wipe my eyes with my hands and open all ears like I'm in Hague court hearings. My good Lord, for heaven's sake I was going for prayers I mean, you can,t be doing this to my senses, that's unfair.Someone is having 'fun'.That was when I stayed in Kape 64.The slaughter house was the room down my floor.Well,I went for the prayers but my day was just like you want to guess. It's 9pm,I'm preparing my ugali at Meru 36,I'm wondering why is my ugali making funnier noise today, anyway,Physics was not my subject and connecting the sounds  made when cooking and  measuring the decibels is not in my mind.On finishing, stop imagining!,what you think was...
